Disposable Nappies vs. Cloth Nappies

Nappies, often known as the diapers in most of the countries, are used to stop urine. It can be found in various forms such as underwear shaped or one which can be fitted to usual underwear. As per various cultures it has been concluded that nappies are existing since beginning of the civilization. People use several materials to create nappies but broadly it can be either of cloth or some synthetic disposable material. We can say that earlier people started using clothes like cotton, silk, Lenin depending over the financial conditions. But as clothes were not so good to absorb lots of nappies need to be carried then washing and drying headache. Thus to solve such problems people started use of synthetic disposable materials as nappies. One of the major reasons behind switching to disposable material was its absorbing strength as disposable materials are able to absorb some limited numbers of pees.

Around 1940s people started developing both type of diapers, one side people started working over cloth diapers by adding more clothes to cloth diapers. On other hand people started to make synthetic diapers more comfortable for babies by adding soft material. When nappies divided into two categories there are some who preferred the type one and rest type two and then comparison started. Let’s have a look up to what extend you can compare these two types of nappies and what facts and figures says.

Cloth Nappies: Cloth nappies are first priority of people who can’t afford deposable nappies. As cloth nappies can be washable and reusable. In many countries where mass of people can’t afford disposable nappies cloth nappies are still in existence. After economical point of view there are some medical facts which force the use of cloth nappies, there is no wonder that doctors always suggest to wear boxers over briefs. Cloth nappies work as boxers where deposable nappies work like brief, thus parents keep cloth nappies on first priority.

Myths with Cloth Nappies: There are lots of myths related to cloth nappies these are as follows

  • Cloth nappies cause rashes- Rashes can be caused by disposable nappies as well. Any nappy can cause rashes, this was even admitted by Kimberley Clark (Makers of Huggies nappies)
  • Cloth nappies equals hard work- Washing things is not a big thing, we wash our hankies as well. Cloth nappies are light thus easy to wash and get dry so quickly.
  • Cloth Nappies stink- All you need to flush the poo before washing and then after a complete wash nappies hardly stink.
Advantages of Cloth Nappies: There are lots of advantages of cloth nappies these are as follows.

  • Cloth nappies not contain any harmful chemical or plastic, thus cloth nappies are safe and secure.
  • Cloth nappies stink less then disposable nappies
  • Cloth nappies are more reliable, as you can wash them anywhere anytime. Even with disposable nappies you have to wash the leaks
  • In an average you need around 5000+ nappies in a year, around £ 900. Where cloth nappies can be reusable and thus more economical then disposable nappies
  • Cloth nappies are environment friendly it not contain any chemical and don’t increase earth wastage
Disadvantage of Cloth Nappies: There are some disadvantages of cloth nappies as well
  • Cloth nappies need to washed after every use and its time consuming
  • Difficult to manage while traveling or outside home

Disposable Nappies: For new mums it’s really difficult to manage everything at a time. In beginning nappies helps them lot disposable nappies help them to keep away from water all the time. It helps to keep the baby stay dry in nights, overnight wetness can cause other despises. For single parents disposable nappies are the best solution, because many times they have to travel or attend events with babies. Disposable nappies are easy to find and throw after use.

Myths with Disposable Nappies:

  • Disposable nappies are costly- We can’t deny the fact they are but it’s also a fact that even cloth nappies need to be washed and the process will include soap, wet bag, dry bag, spray, soaking and man power.
  • Disposable nappies cause rashes- This has been discussed earlier but the answer will be same, you can’t conclude this just by the type of nappies. It can be caused by any type of nappies.

Advantages of Disposable Diapers: Disposable nappies are loved by thousands of mums because of following advantages
  • Compact to carry
  • Can be found on shops easily
  • Easy to use and throw
  • Take less than one minute to change
  • No need to clean poo
After this long discussion over disposable and washable nappies, I suggest the combination of both is the best solution. As its not possible to wash the nappies always and it’s not even easy to afford disposable nappies always. Try to use cloth nappies most of the times, but when it’s necessary prefer the disposable as well. By following this you can save money and can keep your baby healthy.
